Leicester City’s stars have vowed to put up a
much better defense of the Premier League
title than predecessors Chelsea.
Claudio Ranieri’s team finished its last
campaign with a draw at former
champions Chelsea, which came 10th after
an appalling start which cost former boss
Jose Mourinho his job.
The Blues returned to pre-season late after
being given an extra week off and were
sluggish in a poor start, as stars such as
then PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard
were a shadow of their former selves.
But Mirror UK reports Foxes defender
Danny Simpson as revealing that
Leicester’s stars were given a strict
summer fitness programme for next
season – even before their open-top bus
parade.
And when quizzed about Chelsea’s failings
– Mourinho’s men won just one of their
opening five games – Simpson insisted
Leicester would not make the same
mistake.
He said: “After we won the title, we had
our team meeting about our summer plans
– where we have to do this training and
that training. That is just as important as
the first day of pre-season.
“There will be a lot of expectation on us
next season but the lads just take
everything in their stride.
“We want to come back next season and
improve – we want to get better, defend it
and give it a go.
“I think every single player is going to
come back fully fit and ready to go for pre-
season.
“We’re very professional and everyone in
the summer, whether they are
internationals or not, will train and do the
off-the-field stuff to return fit.”
He added: “The Leicester fans know what
we have achieved is unbelievable.
“Even when we are losing in a game they
have always supported us – that is what is
good about the fans.
“I think they know next season is going to
be hard.
“Every other team is going to strengthen
but that is what helps us.”
In a separate event, Chelsea has reportedly
offered former Arsenal captain, Cesc
Fabregas to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The Sun UK says that the Chelsea
midfielder is believed to be unhappy at
Stamford Bridge, much like international
team-mate Pedro, who wants a move back
to Barcelona.
Fabregas, 29, is said to have been
uncomfortable at Chelsea since the sacking
of Jose Mourinho, the man who brought
him to the club, in December.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo
Deportivo, Chelsea and incoming manager
Antonio Conte would be willing to sell the
World Cup winner.
Fabregas enjoyed a brilliant first season in
west London as the Blues won the Premier
League.
He finished with a league-leading 18 assists
as Mourinho’s side waltzed to the title.
However, last season Fabregas – along with
most of the Chelsea squad – regressed as
the team put up the worst defence in
Premier League history.
