Manchester United have announced the release of Victor
Valdes, Nick Powell, George Dorrington and Oliver
Rathbone.
34-year-old goalkeeper Valdes, who enjoyed an incredibly
successful 12-year career at Barcelona, was brought to
United by Louis Van Gaal in 2015, but only played 2 games
for the club as he fell out with the Dutchman for allegedly
refusing to play for the reserves.
Valdes spent the second half of last season on loan at
Belgian side Standard Liege, making 8 appearances for
their first team before the Belgian Cup winners decided to
cut his loan deal short in order to give the youngsters more
playing time.
22-year old Powell failed to establish himself in United’s
first team after his move from Crewe Alexandra 4 years
ago, despite Louis Van Gaal using him as a substitute in the
defeats to Bournemouth and Wolfsburg.
The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan
at Hull City, but only made 5 appearances for Steve Bruce’s
promotion-winning side.
United have also released youngsters George Dorrington
and Oliver Rathbone.
18-year-old goalkeeper Dorrington made 10 appearances
for the youth team last season, whereas 19-year-old
midfielder Rathbone made a single appearance for the
reserves in the Lancashire Senior Cup.
